Passion? Money? Whatever your motivation, start your business today!
At some point in our lives, most of us think we have a great idea for a new business. Sometimes that idea is about a useful product or service. Sometimes it is a major plan for international enterprise. Whatever your ideas, you are probably trying to figure out whether you are going to set up your business because of passion or because of money. It’s a decision we are encouraged to make. In this blog post, we look at the other side of the coin: the fact that being motivated by passion or by money doesn’t necessarily mean that you can’t be motivated by the other thing too.
Let’s start with passion. What do people mean when they talk about ‘doing your passions’? Passions don’t necessarily pay the bills. For that reason, you might be hesitant to start a new company on the back of something so intangible and hard to explain. But on the other hand, passion is the thing that keeps us going even if the money isn’t rolling in (and if you are a new business, there will most likely be times like that). We can’t dismiss our passions as irrelevant in any new endeavour.
So where does money come in? Well, it helps if you’re in the black and not the red. You might even have bigger financial plans and aim to get rich from your new business. But what will you do if the money doesn’t come straight away? What’s the thing that will keep you going? Passion might just be that thing.
There’s a clear overlap here, and it’s not convincing that passion and money have to be totally separate motivations. Whatever you are more motivated by, embrace the other thing and start setting up a business today: you won’t be passionate or in the money unless you do!
